I spent many a weekday evening or weekend afternoon in Mitchell's (I used to live in Newark DE) not to mention alot of $ and was sad to see Mitchells go like so many others in the area. However I was happy to see Doug open up a fantastic model railroad store a few blocks down on Concord Pike. I don't get back to Wilmington all that much but when I do I always stop by Doug's store and buy some supplies and usually drop serious money at the magazine rack as he has one of the most impressive inventories of model railroad and railroad historical society magazines anywhere in the country. Not to mention a wall of brass and lots of other good stuff! Hopefully I may get back up there this year for a weekend of model railroad house tours at holiday time.

Great news about Kevin Eudaly and RMC!

Take care,

GerardGerard J. I can't tell you how many old magazines I have in my collection from the now defunct Mitchell's. You are also correct that Doug's Toys, Trains & Hobbies just north on Concord Pike is a nice little shop. Doug used work the "Trains" section in Mitchell's, so he has plenty of knowledge. Anyway, effective Saturday, August 30, 2014, both Railroad Model Craftsman and Railfan & Railroad magazines have been purchased by White River Productions and will be back on track. Here's the press release from Railroad Model Craftsman: http://www.modelrailroadnews.com/PDF/WRP-Press_Release_140829.pdfPRR2277https://www.blogger.com/profile/07990987671073971207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7293363245536283660.post-30222805636901800522014-08-28T01:14:27.185-05:002014-08-28T01:14:27.185-05:00Hi Eric,

You are certainly a Craftsman and I very much enjoy your blog updates. Your work is something I very much admire and could never duplicate. The fact you are still putting pages in plastic sleeves is good to know and I can feel better that at least we share that skill set. Funny you mention Frary and Hayden as I was going to do a section of their work too but I had to draw the line somewhere to finish. Although I might say something about them and how the hobby evolved, or should I say my observations on how I think the hobby may have evolved, later.

I have learned a great deal from you blog and look forward to seeing your next project.

Thanks do much for your kind words.

Best,

Gerard Gerard J. As such I included the footnote on the V&O building just for you (really!) although I had not realized it was an RMC structure. That makes sense and closes another loop so to speak on my personal understanding of the V&O. Speaking of the role of historic figures in the hobby your work to date on E.L. Moore and his place in the hobby has given me a great deal to think about. Maybe a future blog post.

Thanks for your work and keep posting thoughts which force us to think about the hobby from such a wonderful perspective.

Best,

GerardGerard J. I. too, have collections of articles in clear plastic sleeves, many of them MRC articles. There are so many favourites, and I loved the slightly homespun feel to the layout and illustration in the seventies, particularly the Dave Frary and Bob Hayden series. That's an interesting point, too, about how the nature and character of a magazine changes over time, not always for the best. MRC was on a commanding plateau for a long time...for me, the thing that characterised it was in the name: Craftsman.Iain Robinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03633733907566547236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7293363245536283660.post-68622184714216822672014-08-26T09:18:08.488-05:002014-08-26T09:18:08.488-05:00Thank you both for writing and publishing this pos...Thank you both for writing and publishing this post. I especially enjoyed the notes on Allen McClelland’s V&O series. It was interesting that AHM’s Ramsey Journal kit was mentioned. It turns out the kit was based on a construction article that E. L. Moore published in the December ‘67 issue of RMC. As far as I can tell, RMC was the source of all 8 of the E. L. Moore project articles (appearing in print from ’67 to ’69) that were kitted in plastic. A few have changed manufacturers over the years; some eventually landing at the also now gone Model Power. Some kits were used by the manufacturers who owned them to make variant products and marketed them as ‘new’ kits. Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s these kits seemed to be everywhere, and can still be seen on hobby store shelves, eBay sellers, resale tables, and even as props in magazine articles if one looks closely. Some of the kits were used as the basis of kitbashing articles in RMC and MR. RMC has been influential in so many ways, and over time many things they originated have gone on to become a ubiquitous part of the overall hobby landscape.J D Lowehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07907821767203109311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7293363245536283660.post-4348768408401078282014-08-26T07:42:01.108-05:002014-08-26T07:42:01.108-05:00Thank you Riley and MR.
